My students are from a very, low socio-economic school. Most of my students come from homes that do not encourage a healthy, active lifestyle. I want to incorporate core strength, balance and focus as a basis for a student to be their best. Studies show that students who are in good, physical condition are better-performing students. The equipment that I have requested will challenge students in new ways. The Tumbl Trak equipment will encourage core strength. The Wobble Balance will encourage stability and balance. The bands and stretcher will make students more flexible. The vestibular system is the first to develop in a child. This controls our sense of balance and movement. This balance helps a child to maintain head position and to remain in a fixed position. When a child's balance is off, staying in their seat and staying focused will be affected. This is not fully developed until the age of 12, but I have observed many students at my school still struggling with this in high school. We typically stop working on this with students in late elementary school. I propose to continue this through high school. The exercises I want to implement will also help students cross the midline which will help with left and right brain hemispheres connecting.
