History is often times boring for my students. As a way to engage them, they are asked to create maps, political cartoons, and posters to demonstrate their learning as well as share their new knowledge with their classmates. When given a chance to demonstrate their knowledge through drawings or illustrations, their true understanding is reflected better than with a written response. I normally keep a stash of drawing materials on hand for just this purpose, but due to health and safety restrictions, sharing of supplies is no longer an option for my students. Along with not being able to share supplies, many of my students are going to be learning virtually. Providing them with the supplies to take home will extend their opportunities to be creative while demonstrating their knowledge. One thing I learned this past spring, when all my students were home, is that they wanted a variety of assignments. They wanted to do more than just read an article and answer some questions. Providing them with the supplies to take home will allow me to continue to give them this opportunity. I want my students to see that History class is more than just taking notes. These supplies will help me do that.
