  • 3D Printing for STEM Grades 9-12

    Funded Sep 29, 2016

First let me express my deep thanks for your generosity. The 3D printers you donated go a long way in benefiting our students. Our school now has a 3D printing club that meets every Wednesday to design and print new objects. I have coupled our 3D printers with our school's Chromebooks. First, students started to research websites including Thingiverse to discover how to print 3D objects. Each student then downloads the object in .STL format and uploads it into FlashPrint, a program that is supplied with the printers themselves. This software program allows students to manipulate print thickness, speed, and infill percentage. Then students prep each printer with masking tape and glue and send the file to the printer.

The entire 3D printing process is filled with opportunities for students to work with emerging technology and applied it in practical, educational, and creative ways. Our newly formed club has received widespread attention among campus. We have even partnered with our school's business academy to produce sunglasses that their academy uses during demonstrations in Virtual Enterprise.

Thank you again for this donation. We have never felt so much gratitude as with this donation. These printers will keep my students busy for years to come.”

    With gratitude,

    Teacher Hunsperger

  • 3D Printing Laptop for STEM Education, Highest-Poverty

    Funded Oct 11, 2016

Thank you again for your wonderful donation. The fruits of this project will be seen for many years to come! I speak for all of my students when we express our deep gratitude for these technological gifts. Without your support, we never would have the opportunity to do great things with modern technology such as the 3D printer.”

    With gratitude,

    Teacher Hunsperger

Students will use the bank of 4 3D printers to design and print architectural models fit to scale certain buildings, monuments, and landmarks in the local Palm Springs area. Students will use trigonometry to verify the measurements. This semester-long project will help students engage in the real world application of mathematics and architectural design. Additionally, a separate 3D printing club is being implemented on our high school campus. Students (25+ already signed up) in this club will design and print objects using iMac computers in our library to help represent our school. These include school logos, variations of our mascot, and other accessories. The 3D printing club will take requests from other clubs and sports teams to produce objects to help fundraise their respective programs. Our plan is to partner with our business academy, entitled Money, Marketing, and Management (MMM) to handle the business end of the fundraisers. Together, we are building a collaborative team of students and teachers that can benefit from these printers.
