When children come from low socioeconomic statuses and are expected to achieve high demands with the Common Core, a great teacher must find ways to engage and motivate their students! With your help, they will be able to intimately listen to stories read out loud to them through the use of the portable CD player, of stories taking them to far away lands, cozy up to a book on a bean bag chair and be able to have easy access to materials with the use of the caddies and storage bins. I can imagine my students sitting on a cozy bean bag utilizing a "hear myself phone" where children can listen closely to their stories and hear their own voice reading to themselves, helping them become careful readers! The phonemic awareness instant learning centers, sequence and write story cards and a class set of magnetic tiles will help my struggling readers build on critical foundational skills to become life-long readers and help them achieve the next skill they need to get to second grade! While literacy is such an important skill, our students need to find a passion for mathematics as well. Through the use of the resource like Math learning centers, building math skills write and wipe set and the crucial write and wipe number lines, can allow for students to become stronger mathematicians. Students will be able to use manipulatives found in each of these sets requested and build on their number sense. The idea of letting my students use dry erase markers to work in math and practice their numbers and doubles facts will provide them with the motivation and build their stamina to succeed in first grade. These materials and resources will help make a tremendous difference in the way my students learn and succeed!
