During Daily 5 literacy centers in my kindergarten classroom, students work independently to practice the skills learned that day in large group lessons. When the activities they choose are engaging and hands-on, children feel empowered to improve their own learning. This growth mindset it vital for student engagement and success. Although I frequently make my own games and activities for Daily 5 centers such as Word Work and Work on Writing, the types of materials available from companies such as Lakeshore Learning are durable, colorful, and unique. In my classroom during literacy rotations, students work independently to master skills taught during large group mini lessons. These skills form the foundation for reading and writing and include alphabet knowledge, sight words, segmenting and blending sounds in words, and rhyming. The materials requested in this project provide young children opportunities to work on those skills. For example, "Lakeshore Alphabet Rockets" allow children the opportunity to match letters and sounds using fun, engaging materials. The sight word stamps and stamp pads help students practice building words with sounds and sight word knowledge and then record in on paper in a hands-on method. The "Alphabet Learning Locks" work on fine motor skills at the same time that alphabetic knowledge is applied. Being able to provide more ways for students to work independently will increase student learning and engagement in my classroom. When children have lots of opportunities to learn in fun ways, the foundation for lifelong learning is established.
