Manipulatives are objects that are used in my classroom as teaching tools to help engage students in the hands-on learning of mathematics. They can be used to introduce, practice, or remediate a concept especially for students learning English as they learn new Math.
It is the position of the National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics (NCSM) that in order to develop every student’s mathematical proficiency, leaders and teachers must systematically integrate the use of concrete manipulatives into classroom instruction at all grade levels.
Manipulatives allows each student to construct their own model for abstract mathematical ideas and processes. It also provides a common language with which to communicate these models to the teacher and other students.
