Our Language & Literature curriculum includes a study of the Holocaust and Elie Wiesel's memoir Night. I am currently planning a follow up unit that covers human rights and genocide more broadly. It's important for the future leaders in my classroom to understand that the Holocaust was neither the first nor the only example of genocide. Thus, this second unit will include literature circles, where students select a book that best suits their area of inquiry and work together in a collaborative group reading and discussing their text. I want to offer several titles focusing on the internment of Japanese Americans during WWII in the US, the Armenian genocide, and events in Rwanda, the Balkans, and Cambodia.
