  • Music Room Essentials: Small Items for a Big Impact

    Funded May 3, 2023

Thank you for your generous support of our elementary music program! Our music room is the site of lots of activity throughout the week: music classes, after-school ensemble rehearsals, band practices, student songwriting sessions, and more! It's often the little things -- like splitters and markers -- that keep our rehearsals running smoothly and help to ensure a positive learning experience for all of our students. Your generous support will make a HUGE difference in our day-to-day music making, and we are so very grateful! Thank you again for your generosity and kindness.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Schwartz

  • Better Together: Audio Equipment for Collaborative Music Making

    Funded Nov 28, 2022

Thank you for supporting our third, fourth, and fifth grade music students!

Thanks to your generosity, our project is fully funded -- and swiftly! We couldn't be happier, as Battle of the Bands is fast approaching, and with this year's trophy on the line, our bands are ready for rehearsals! Thanks to your help, we've got new audio equipment headed our way, which will allow multiple bands to practice in the same space and still hear each other clearly.

We are so grateful for the incredible kindness of our DonorsChoose community. Thank you again!”

    Ms. Schwartz

  • Exploring Tabla With a Virtual Class Visitor (Grade 1)

    Funded Mar 25, 2021

Thank you for helping to inspire a new school tradition! Our first graders were delighted to welcome a virtual guest, and we loved exploring tabla and the music of India. Together we learned a tabla composition, and we performed our composition in a virtual school concert. Students enjoyed the opportunity to meet a musical visitor, to hear tabla music performed live (in Google Meet, of course), and to ask questions about tabla and Indian music. For future years, we hope that our virtual class visit, and the related unit of musical learning, will remain an annual tradition for our first grade students. ”

Thank you so much for your support! I'm excited to share that our project is fully funded.

In our music classroom and at home, students are learning to take ownership of their own practice habits -- not just learning how to practice, but also creating practice routines that feel fun, engaging, and meaningful. Thanks to your generous support, students will have a variety of practice tools at their fingertips. I am so grateful for your help.”

  • Building a Community Collection of Instruments (Part 3)

    Funded Dec 2, 2020

As our school year draws to a close, I'm feeling so very grateful for the support of our incredible DonorsChoose community. Thank you for helping to build a Community Collection of instruments for my elementary music students.

Back in July 2020, we began to assemble a Community Collection of instruments for students to play at home. Our multi-part project seemed ambitious; we needed hundreds of instruments for students to play during remote music instruction. But your generous support helped to make the impossible possible.

Thanks to you, we've had a year of meaningful music making. In the midst of a challenging year, our music learning has continued -- from wherever they were, our students continued to make music together. Though we couldn't play together in person, students used their Community Collection instruments to participate in virtual music lessons. This year, students worked together to create performance videos for virtual concerts and other virtual special occasions. As a part of our virtual music lessons, students worked together in bands. Together we practiced playing chords and drum patterns; we worked together in small groups to practice our parts; and we created rehearsal videos to prepare for our virtual concerts. Students watched each other's virtual performances, cheered for one another, and voted to select the winner of our second annual (and first virtual) Battle of the Bands. I've been so proud of students' musical curiosity, expressivity, and creativity.

Thank you for your support of our music program. Our Community Collection has allowed students to continue making music this year, and the collection will continue to serve our music students for many years to come.”

This year I serve over 500 students in grades Pre-K through 5. We are a Title I school, and most of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch. Our school opened in September 2015, and together our students, teachers, and families are working to build a welcoming and inclusive school environment. Our students and families come from many different countries and speak a wide variety of languages, and our students love learning from one another. My students' musical interests reflect the tremendous diversity of our school community. My students sing lullabies in Spanish; they show me instruments they remember from their homes in Bangladesh; they dance to American pop music, cartoon soundtracks, and children's songs from a wide variety of cultures and traditions. We are working to build a collection of classroom and concert repertoire that represents students' own musical interests and traditions.
