I am a clinical school social worker and this is my first year working within the public school system. Knowing that nationally, 13-20% of children aged 2-18 will experience a diagnosable mental health disorder in a given year, my role is to address this problem by providing evidence-based treatments in school. And your contribution can assist in my efforts as I am in need of multiple items that are both therapeutic and culturally responsive towards my client population. My students come from diverse backgrounds and deserve to be represented in the treatment space. I work across grade levels hence why the books selected vary in complexity. Books such as the Multicultural Stories Paperback Library and Mirror Mirror, promote literacy in the therapy space while simultaneously providing positive imagery. The toys and games are therapeutic by design too. The goal of them is to increase self-awareness, provide students with a vocabulary to better express themselves and support them in their own behavior self-management. Games such as Mindfulness Matters, Stop Think Relax and even Connect 4 directly reinforce positive coping skills and teach students how their thoughts, emotions, and actions are connected. I utilize history, literature, current social events, culture, and ethnicity to achieve mental and emotional wellbeing for my students. Hence why a map of Africa, with books by Malcolm X, Alice Walker, and James Baldwin books are included. For materials will help evoke the students' innate strengths and provide a new framework towards making healthy decisions in this challenging society. As a clinical social worker, I am both an advocate for social equity and provider of mental health services. And through your support, I can continue to guide the next generation towards being mentally healthy, empathic, adaptable, and compassionate leaders.
