Each year, myself and two other school counselors work to create a mental health fair for all 300 of our high school students. By doing this, we are able to educate, inform, and inspire adolescents about their mental health. We provide resources, information and supplies to help students address their mental health needs. This year, the mental health fair is titled HAY Day to address Mental Health and You! We will be providing an inspirational speaker and many break-out sessions for our students. I will be hosting a session about Anxiety in the classroom. My goal is to create a sensory bag for each student so that during times of stress or anxiety, they have a tool they can carry with them. In the bag, there will be objects available that do not disrupt the class, but help the student process their emotional response. I plan to do the following: For sight, a student will print and put an image in their bag that helps them think of a happy place or time. For taste, the student will have a few sour and sweet pieces of candy to allow them to focus on the taste, rather than the emotional response. For feeling, the student will have access to a sensory object of their choice to utilize while moving through an emotion. For scent, the student will have a mini oil diffuser with a scent of their choice that they can use to help them feel calm. Students will make their own customized bag and learn additional coping skills and tools to help the learn to manage their daily stress in the classroom.
