  • Each Time You Waste a Moment You Waste Make Believe

    Funded Oct 20, 2010

    As soon as the books came in the mail my students became extremely excited (The word crazy might even be a better adjective)! I can't tell you how nice it is to see kids finally excited about books and reading. Especially when their normal reaction is to say, "Readin? Ugh!"

    The girls have been constantly checking out the N. Sparks books and the boys have been taking out the graphic novels like they were made of candy. There were even a few books that EVERYONE (in particular the Hunger Games books) wanted to check out that I was forced to hold a class lottery to determine who got to check them out first!

    Another really neat thing that has been happening is that whenever any student finishes their classwork or tests a few minutes before the rest of the class the first thing they do is pull out a book they have checked out and begin reading it with such devotion it is hard to get their attention when it is time to bring the class back together.

    Thanks for getting my kids excited about FUN reading!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Potter

  • The Rhythm of Reading

    Funded Oct 13, 2010

    We received the books on tape this week and my students were so excited! I don't think that my students could grasp the concept that someone could be so generous as to donate their time and money to help them learn! They were absolutely floored. +

    ++

    +I think that it is so important for students to practice reading and HEARING how words are supposed to sound. That is why these auditory supplies are so vital to my classroom. I can tell you that it is making the reading of "The Hunger Games" SO much easier. The students are loving the book. I had students come in at the start of the year and say "I hate reading!" These are the same students that rush into the room everyday and say, "Can we start the book? Can we start the book? Huh, huh can we, can we?!" I've actually had students take the books home at night so they can continue reading. +

    ++

    +As soon as we finish "The Hunger Games" we are going to move on to "Night." The students are very excited about this book as well since we are taking a class trip to D.C. to visit the Holocaust museum after the reading of the book. +

    ++

    +Thank you for helping me to excite my students about learning...and especially READING!+

    ++

    +(The students are excited to start writing their own thank you letters soon, so be on the lookout!)”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Potter

  • Books-The Place Your Story Begins

    Funded Dec 8, 2009

    I am sorry that I am late in writing this letter. I wanted to wait until my classes actually started reading the books so I could give you a first hand account of how much they are enjoying them!

    When my classes came back from spring break I made the choice to have all my classes read "The Outsiders" and I can't tell you how much they are enjoying it! I have students coming up to me after class telling me, "This is such a good book, Ms. P!" I also have students who borrow the book so they can read ahead each night because they can't wait till our following class period to see what happens next.

    For a lot of my students this will be the first full book they will have ever read the entire way through. I am so glad that they are enjoying it so much that I hope it will inspire them to try more books in the future.

    Thank you so much for your help in getting us these books! Both I and my students can't thank you enough!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Potter

  • A Book Is A Present You Can Open Again And Again

    Funded Oct 23, 2009

    I don't know if words are going to be able to express how excited these books have made my children. The very MINUTE the office buzzed my office to let me know my package had arrived my students swooped in on me like a storm of locusts. Ever since then the books have been being checked out of my classroom library like hotcakes. I was barely able to keep enough books on hand to get the thank you pictures!

    You would have thought that the Jonas Brothers (or whoever is cool with 8th grade girls) were in my classroom the way the girls squealed when they saw that they finally had access to "Bluford High" books. The boys have been taking out the "Diary of a wimpy kid" and "Hatchet" books continuously as well.

    Most of these kids have never read a full book before, but the access to FUN books and the thought that people cared enough about them to send them these books has filled them with a desire to read.

    Their enthusiasm has spread to me and given me a burst of new energy!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Potter

  • Books Fall Open, You Fall In!

    Funded Sep 13, 2009

    Thank you so much for supplying the funds for the class set of "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas!"

    Since receiving the books most of my students have confided in me that they have never read a class novel before (which means that most of them have NEVER read a real novel). They were also blown away that someone was generous enough and willing to donate these books to them! They also asked me to express their thanks by having me tell you that you are, "awesome!"

    I have to say that I agree!

    This simple act of kindness on your part has excited my kids, and myself, about going to school everyday.

    Thank you!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Potter
