My project is simply to provide my students with lab supplies in order for them to engage in hands-on learning. By providing students with visual demonstrations of abstract concepts and materials with which they can construct their own models, they will gain a better understanding of the often abstract processes we study in Earth Science. Through the use of these materials students will be able to explore and engage with the content in ways they were previously unable to. For example, the concept of plate tectonics is often difficult for students to comprehend. Through the use of a simple demonstrator that uses sand, I will be able to model certain processes for these students. Additionally, through the use of modeling clay, students will also have the opportunity to model these processes on their own and engage in inquiry. Other requested materials such as the compasses will allow students to engage in necessary curricular tasks such as locating the epicenter of an earthquake. Other materials are consumable supplies, necessary to create the many different models student create throughout the course. Earth and Space Science concepts are generally very abstract to students, and through the use of models, these ideas can be brought into the classroom in order to better allow students to visualize and comprehend these large scale processes that make our planet function.
