This project will benefit two self-contained classrooms of children with autism in grades K-5. Students will benefit from having their own sensory calming kit filled with calming tools and soothing activities for their needs and interests such as kinetic sand, theraputty, water colors, listening to music, visuals of yoga poses, sensory balls, and noise canceling headphones. Self-regulation is a critical component of social and emotional learning. It’s critical to show all learners that it’s healthy to need a break once in a while. Taking a few minutes to re-focus and gather your emotions is a much better choice than yelling, pushing or saying mean words. Students who have the ability to regulate their emotions and behavior are able to better engage with other students and respond to the varying activities of the day. This past year our kiddos learned to request these items when ever they needed a break. They also shared or took turns with the kinetic sand, theraputty, paints, and fidget toys with their peers. Unfortunately, students will no longer be able to share materials that we used as sensory and calming tools in the classroom. Students will require their own materials and supplies. I want to continue supporting my students with their social, emotional, and academic needs in any way I can. Thank you for your support!
