My amazing 6th graders are at a crucial stage of development when they are learning what empathy means in relation to their fellow students and others around them. These carefully selected novels each have main characters with special needs. Reading and responding to these texts will help my students to develop the skill of empathy. We will discuss not only what empathy is, but how they can show it to their fellow students. Empathy is one of the most important skills I can help my students to develop, arguably as important as the reading and writing skills taught in my class. Empathy will help my students interact with their special-needs peers in a way that is both respectful and affirming. We will use these novels in Literature Circles, where students read in small groups and meet in "book club" settings where they are guided through book discussions. The Lit Circles will also have a service-learning element where students meet and serve special needs students in our community and school in order to put their knowledge of empathy into practice.
