Funded Nov 15, 2012I can't begin to tell you how excited my sixth grade students were when I informed them of your generous donation of weekly Scholastic News Magazines for our classroom use. They were full of questions as well as comments of appreciation.
We have gotten many magazines by now, and we always find ways to use them in class (and outside of class as well). We always read the feature or cover story together in class and have rich discussions. These discussions increase their understanding of historical and/or current news events.
In addition, I frequently break the students into small groups and assign the groups different articles to read. Then we come back together as a whole class and the expectation is that the students will "educate" the rest of the class on their particular reading experience. This is a fun type of learning entitled "jigsaw reading" and it is highly successful, mainly because of the high interest level provided by the Scholastic News Magazines.”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Conklin
