  • 6th Grade Students Desire Scholastic News Magazine

    Funded Nov 15, 2012

I can't begin to tell you how excited my sixth grade students were when I informed them of your generous donation of weekly Scholastic News Magazines for our classroom use. They were full of questions as well as comments of appreciation.

We have gotten many magazines by now, and we always find ways to use them in class (and outside of class as well). We always read the feature or cover story together in class and have rich discussions. These discussions increase their understanding of historical and/or current news events.

In addition, I frequently break the students into small groups and assign the groups different articles to read. Then we come back together as a whole class and the expectation is that the students will "educate" the rest of the class on their particular reading experience. This is a fun type of learning entitled "jigsaw reading" and it is highly successful, mainly because of the high interest level provided by the Scholastic News Magazines.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Conklin

  • Elmo is Not Just a Sesame Street Character

    Funded Feb 23, 2011

My students have been thoroughly delighted by the document camera that you so graciously gave us to use. Their attention is immediately captured when I turn off the lights, pull down the screen, turn on the LCD projector, and show them some wonderful 3D object under the amazing document camera! Thank you so much once again for your generosity. You should feel all warm and fuzzy inside with the knowledge that, because of your donation, my students and future students will be using 21st century technology to access information.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Conklin

  • Help Me Span The Digital Divide With An LCD Projector

    Funded Oct 3, 2009

The students in my classroom have been enthralled with the images that I've been able to project onto the pull-down screen in the room, thanks to your fabulous donation of the LCD projector! We use the projector daily to view science video clips, the Astronomy-Picture-of-the-Day, and wonderful programs from websites such as BrainPop.com and DiscoveryEducation.com.

I can't begin to tell you what a difference it has made for me to have access to wonderful visual material. The students are actively engaged at all times and are eagerly sitting on the edges of their seats waiting to see what new and exciting images will be projected on the screen.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Conklin

I am asked, "Is it true you are NOT using the vast resources on the internet in your classroom?" and I have to admit that my classroom lacks the necessary equipment to be able to do that.
