As an English teacher, I constantly stress the importance of reading. I encourage students to read ANYTHING: newspapers, magazines, fictional books, non-fiction, graphic novels & comics, etc. Any reading is good reading. It is hard to motivate younger students when are being forced to read archaic works of Shakespeare. No matter how much you stress to them the importance of his work, they don't like it because they struggle with the language. With the William Shakespeare's Star Wars, students will get to read a story they know and love, all while being challenged by the "archaic" language! Students will be taught all about Shakespeare and the influence he has had on our language, but the actual literature we read will be a screenplay of the original Star Wars, written as if it had been authored by Shakespeare himself. The students will have a ton of fun acting it out and completing different reading and writing assignments with the intention of engaging student learning.
