Students will use their classroom set of Chromebooks to participate in National Novel Writing Month, as well as other publishing opportunities. Students struggle to see their writing mean anything in the real world. I'd like to teach the necessary skills and conventions of writing within projects students can take ownership in. The constant struggle of a Language Arts teacher is providing immediate feedback in student writing. If I assign a personal narrative essay, it will take me at least a week to return the paper to students. By then, their errors are graded and it's difficult to motivate students to make revisions. However, if students are working from a Google Document, I can actually watch them write from my monitor and provide immediate feedback. They can also access their peers' writing and add comments and suggestions in the middle of the writing process. We can retire grammar practice from worksheets, and instead assign students to choose pages from their own story to make convention edits. When students have the opportunity to publish their writing it authenticates their assignments. Even if they're only publishing in our classroom, they are earning their voice and finding an audience. They will leave my class knowing they created something as tangible as a painting from their art class.
