Read to Succeed!
Funded Oct 23, 2019My students have thoroughly enjoyed all of the books they received. Even students from other teachers were coming in to check out the new books in the library and begin reading for fun. This has sparked a positive change in students because they are now exposed to an environment surrounded with different books that spark their interest in reading.
Moreover, many students found an interest in the books about the Holocaust. For instance, a lot of students checked out Night and read about Wiesel's experience. The students were horrified by what they read about and learned a lot about concentration camps. This sparked a conversation about what we can do to prevent future genocides from occurring.
Students in class got to practice a lot of close reading strategies to prepare for upcoming state exams.”

Funded Oct 17, 2018On behalf of my students and I, thank you so much for your generosity! The kids have been devouring the books which were donated to our class library. The books we got facilitated independent learning both inside and outside of the classroom. We had independent reading sessions during class, and also independent reading assignments for homework. I've noticed a significant improvement in student interest in reading due to the fact that students now have easy access to books.
Several students have checked out entire series of books over time and read them in their entirety. One of my boys checked out two books at once because he knew he would have a lot of free time to read during winter break. One of my girls checked out the second book in a series after returning the first one and raving about what she read. Another girl who saw "The Hate U Give" in theaters was thrilled to find it in our library and be able to read it at home. When we were reading Wiesel's memoir on the holocaust, a girl begged to check out "The Boy in the Stripped Pajamas." Yet another student is in love with the Harry Potter series and was thrilled to be able to read it in and out of class.
I've definitely noticed an improvement in student engagement, interest in reading, and reading proficiency since our library was expanded. Thanks again for your help!”

Ms. L.

Funded Jan 9, 2018Many of my students do not have access to technology outside of school. They don't have access to computers or laptops, much less printers. The printer in my classroom is very old, but it still works--if we have paper and ink. The ink you helped pay for currently helps all of my students print their essays for my class and for other classes as well. Although it may seem like a small, simple task, it makes a huge difference for my students to be able to type and print work they can be proud of.
Furthermore, our school lacks textbooks, and they have a limit on copies, so I often have to make copies of the articles and passages we read in class. Without the ink you supplied, my students would not be able to read as much because there would simply not be passages to read. Moreover, the tablets you provided allow students to access online reading, vocabulary, and grammar programs that have increased literacy in my classroom.
The laptops provided helped my students be able to type their essays, create presentations presentations, and work on Reading Plus. Publishing their essays by typing them is the final stage of the writing process, which we've been working on in class. Creating presentations for group projects was an amazing learning experience, since some of my students were not too familiar with Google slides. Finally, Reading Plus is a reading program that increases literacy in the classroom. Thanks to the laptops my students' typing, writing, and reading skills have improved.”
