  • Good Grief Girls Need Relief

    Funded Nov 12, 2024

I would like to express my deepest gratitude for your unselfish contribution to the girl students at Kenwood Academy High School. Your donation is so very important to us. It helps our girls feel safe in their most vulnerable states. It also gives them confidence that they can have access to protection during that time of the month. We were able to serve over 100 girls with tea, coco and their personal needs.

We believe in community and this would not be possible without your generous gifts. May this letter serve as proof that your giving is not in vain. Hundreds of girls face daily battles and the smallest acts of kindness can make a huge difference.

Please know that we are grateful and will continue to pay it forward in any any that we can.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Brown

  • Plant Your Dreams

    Funded Aug 26, 2024

Thank you so much for your generous donation. Since the delivery and set up of the classroom plants, the entire space has transformed into a tranquil paradise for learning. I positioned the plants on top of the cabinets so it is the first thing that catches your eye when coming through the door.

When the students first saw the materials they were thrilled. One student, Amaria said, " this classroom is so relaxing and I love how inviting you"ve made it for us."

My next steps include assigning the speech topic of "Planting your Dreams." Students will have to express their future dreams and how they plan to take steps to get there.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Brown

  • An Apple a Day Keeps Instruction A-Okay!

    Funded Nov 29, 2023

I would like to start by saying thank you for your generous donation. Your contribution has made a huge impact on the level of instruction that I can give to my students. Apple computers are all-purpose devices, meaning they can easily keep up with various demanding tasks. For example, in my Speech Elective class students are required to record a number of their performances. However, many do not have the capability to download the video to viewable apps. With my latest mac computer, I can easily airdrop their videos to my computer for viewing. It accepts almost any format.

In addition to this, navigating apps is a breeze on my Apple computer. The user-friendly layout creates an enjoyable experience for me and the students that I also to use the computer. The screen is clear and easy to read from a distance. I use the projector every day to start class and teach throughout the period. This helps those students who are in need of glasses or who have forgotten them for the day.

It will also be beneficial to use an updated Microsoft software to design the commencement programs. This is an important keep sake for both students and parents.

I cannot express my gratitude enough for the miracle of this gift. It is truly a blessing to my students.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Brown

  • Calming Corner

    Funded Jul 22, 2023

Thank you so much for brining the Calming Corner to life.

Every morning I had at least one student who takes a comfy seat in the bean bag chair and takes a few moments to gather their thoughts and relax before an hectic day. It brings peace and a space to just be.

The snacks have quieted empty stomachs and the speaker allows them to connect to their favorite calming music.

One student commented, "Having a space where I can retreat from all of the outside noice has helped me get through some of my most challenging moments. I feel so comfortable in the chair- I wish I could take it home."

This project has taught me that it doesn"t take alot to provide peace for our students.

I am looking forward to providing this space for more and more students as the years pass by.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Brown

  • Scrabble Your Way to the Top!

    Funded Jan 7, 2022

My students and I use the resources every other Friday. This is our game day. I rotate groups on each of these days so that students have experience playing with others who are on different levels than themselves. One particular moment that warms my heart is the week after we played our first game, several students game into class begging me to let them play again - sooner than the next scheduled play. I couldn't believe their excitement just after one round of play. It was at this moment, that I knew I made a good decision to bring this project to life.

The first day that introduced "Scrabble" to my students, most were terrified. Many stated that they had never heard of the game, let alone know how to effectively play it. They heard stories of needing to have a robust vocabulary to do well in the game. I assured them that this was not the case. Needless to say, the first day was tough for most of my students. After I explained the rules, there was tons of questions. However, half way through the period, I began to hear more positive comments. One moment in particular came from a student named Ishwa Stephens. He got so excited when he as able to score a triple word score. He yelled out to his opponent, "I've got it now!"

The next steps are to continue our bi-weekly play to get better and better. At the end of the year, I will run a week long tournament and crown the winner with a special gift. I am also teaching my students to teach others who are not in the class to play by investing in boards of their own. My students and I could not be more grateful for the funding of this project.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Brown

I teach a Speech Elective course. This course gives students an opportunity to learn about the foundation of communication when improving their listening comprehension, writing, spelling and pronunciation skills. Every day, we explore a new vocabulary word. Without vocabulary, nothing can be conveyed. Research has shown that vocabulary helps students express themselves more precisely and sharpens communication skills. What better way to expand and challenge the skills of using vocabulary than using the game of Scrabble? This is a fun and useful way to build vocabulary while providing healthy competition within our classroom.
