Written by another student: "I have always enjoyed reading books, and books have really helped me improve in my ELA class. But, my classrooms have not had new libraries for years. Books cost a lot of money, and my school does not always have the resources to get us the new books that come out. It would be really great for people to donate to our class, so that we can have interesting books to read."
Each day at school, my students spend between 30 minutes to an hour reading independently. This time not only fosters a love of literature but also allows students to progress towards their Accelerated Reader (AR) goals. In the AR database, students can choose from a wide array of books, across disciplines and difficulties. Each book has a point value, and each of my students has a unique point goal to reach every quarter. Once they have finished reading a book, they take an AR quiz to demonstrate comprehension of what they read. AR is a great system because it allows teachers to track students' reading progress over the course of each quarter as well as gives students autonomy over what they choose to read.
For my class library, I want a collection of books that will continue to foster my students' love for reading. From A Series of Unfortunate Events, to Matilda, to The Watsons Go to Birmingham, I want books in my library that spark all of their interests and curiosities. If we want to instill in them the habit of reading for pleasure, I need books that, not only interest them, but also are in a condition that they deserve. The passion has been ignited, now I need the materials to keep the fire burning.
