Every year I teach my health students body systems. I teach the circulatory, digestive, skeletal, nervous, and respiratory systems. I teach these systems at various levels depending on if I have Kindergarteners or sixth graders or in between. All the systems are challenging to teach without good hands-on props. Last year I borrowed the local middle school human torso model and the effects were truly noticeable. The students had way more questions and wanted to touch and handle the model. It helped me focus on particular body systems with something other than dated posters or a You-tube video. I didn't want to return it as I could've used it for three fourths of the year. Good hands-on materials get kids attention and foster curiosity. This torso model has proven its value as a teaching tool to get my students to see and understand a topic that is just under our skin yet so hard for them to fathom. My task as the health teacher for my 480 students is to give them the information and the skills needed to make quality health enhancing decisions. I want them to be curious about how their bodies work and this funny sounding model, "the sexless torso" , goes a long way helping me make them knowledgeable about how their bodies work.
