Research shows over and over again that the way to become a better reader is to read! I run my classroom by introducing reading with a lesson and then I let my students dive into a book. I allow students to choose their own books, because I feel this is how students learn to love reading. In order for my classroom to be successful, I need to fill it with excellent children's literature. I have chosen books from the top recommended young adults list and from the Newberry award winners list. I want my students to be taken to a new world or on a wonderful adventure with the books that they read. I want my students to learn about things going on outside of their world. The stories can do everything from helping my students escape their everyday life for a short while or to give them characters to relate to and encourage them through their struggles.
