We want to work with students to improve their literacy - both their reading skills and their love of reading. In order to reach this goal, we have created a school-wide reading challenge with an incentive program - Book Bingo. Students are given a bingo board with different genres and categories books to read, with the goal being to get bingos and blackouts. We believe that these incentives will motivate students to complete the reading challenge, thus helping them reach their goals and our goals for them. Research consistently proves that reading more improves reading comprehension and increases a lifelong love of reading. In the 2017-18 school year (the last year for which we have data), our students tested on state tests at 58% proficient in language arts. While we were excited that this is above state average, we would still like to see higher numbers and improve literacy overall within our school. To fall in line with research, we believe that the Book Bingo reading challenge and incentives will help our students read more, thus improving their reading comprehension and other literacy skills. Our goal is to improve student learning through the use of these incentives.
