The students are in the process of learning all about ancient Greece in relation to the Olympics. They are analyzing primary and secondary resources to answer the question, do the Olympics unite us? In this unit, the students will be writing a persuasive letter to a city council member explaining why they believe (or do not believe) a small version of the Olympics should be held in their city. The students will be required to gather information on the ancient Olympics as well as the modern Olympic movement. They will also research information about their community and even hold a mock Olympic competition, which will be part of our Father’s Day festivities this June. The education of the Olympic movement helps promote positive cultural values and encourages the practice of sports activities. I have noticed that during this unit my students are particularly interested in Greek mythology, but it seems to be a little difficult to understand as it is not easily relatable. To help clear up the confusion and increase comprehension my hope is to integrate the graphic novel Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief. This book is action packed and expresses a great message of perseverance and courage.
