This year our resource room is home to a specialized program for students with moderate to severe needs, including but not limited to children with autism and intellectual disability. In addition to barriers due to their disabilities, many of my students also encounter barriers resulting from language development and socioeconomic status. Approximately 90% of our students are Latino.
I am very excited to start a specialized program for students with moderate to severe education needs. Although this is a very exiting experience, it is also a challenging one. Starting a new program means we have very limited resources. As a special education teacher, I need to ensure that I deliver excellent instruction in math, reading, writing, and life skills with the limited resources and materials available.
