  • Learning In and Through the Arts

    Funded Feb 9, 2022

Thank you so much for your donations to my classroom. We are grateful for your generosity and continued support of us and our work. Since receiving our classroom supplies, we have been hard at work creating and learning in and through the arts. We have done a variety of projects that have helped students not only learn about artists and cultures, but about us as well. For example, we just finished a project where we looked at Japanese Artist, Yayoi Kusama. We used her work as a model to talk about traditions, and how we see things in our own way. Students then made their own "Yayoi Kusama" pumpkins, and added things about them that they loved. Students were excited about all of the different materials that we used, and loved having the ability to create in their own ways.

Again, thank you so much for your dedication to our classroom and your help to public school children.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Schuh-Modelli

  • Text Sets for 3rd Graders

    Funded Apr 29, 2021

Thank you so much for contributing to our classroom. My students are so happy to have new text sets where they can see themselves in their reading. Our new books are engaging my students while at the same time they are working on their reading strategies. Some of the strategies that we work on are inferring information, summarizing, and discussing character traits.

Students participate in reading in some manner every day. Some days students have a reading group or book group, some days students independently read, and some days students also work on pair reading. There is a wide variety of options for students daily. This allows students to work at their independent reading level, so that they can continue to become great readers. We also work to foster a love of reading, and one way to do that is to give students books that they enjoy. This gives students the chance to enjoy reading, especially since they can see themselves in the literature.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Schuh-Modelli

  • Virtual Victory for Student Success

    Funded Aug 28, 2020

Thank you so much for your donations to our third grade classroom. Your donations have made a world of change for my classroom during this difficult time. My co-teacher and I went house to house, apartment to apartment the first week of school to deliver materials. It is because of you that we were able to meet students during this difficult time, and to ensure that our students had what they needed to ensure success. Our students were thrilled that they had beginning of school materials, and that they were able to use them even on the first day!

Students have used their materials on a daily basis. First, we use our whiteboards and markers so that we can write out ideas and show our thinking. We do this in math, reading, and writing. Students are more able to show their thinking on their whiteboard while on Google Meets, and it has helped me as well because I can see what students know. The whiteboards have helped students to understand new concepts and skills, and it has also helped me to understand what they understand, so I am able to better guide my instruction. Distance learning has proved challenging, but it is easier with each student having whiteboards, markers, and notebooks with pencils so that they can write things down.

Finally, our headphones have proven to be most helpful! I did not realize how many siblings our students have, and how many of them were in the same room having google meets! The headphones allow our students to focus on lessons without the distraction of their siblings and other teachers talking. This has proven to be a great resource!

Thank you for all you have done for my students and myself. Your donation has helped to change distance learning for the better!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Schuh-Modelli

  • Bringing Diversity to Life Through Books

    Funded Jun 3, 2018

Apologies for the late thank you! Third graders have been busy settling into the school year and learning new things. We have focused a lot of our time on reading our new books and looking at the different perspectives of the characters so that we can compare and contrast these ideas. We also have been learning how to infer information, and what these books mean to us in our day and age. My students have loved these books! It is especially impactful for many of my students of color because they feel that they have access to characters who look like them, and for many books, characters who have helped to shape our world. These students feel that they can relate more to the characters, and it helps to deepen their understanding.

    Thank you so much!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Schuh-Modelli

Welcome to 3rd grade! My students come from various backgrounds and cultures. Every year, there are approximately 5-7 home languages spoken in my classroom, and we gather around a common goal of learning to become better citizens through core subjects such as reading, writing, math, social studies, and science. We also use various types of art to help us access our learning and to help us "show what we know".
