  • The Power of Independent Self-Selected Reading

    Funded Aug 17, 2018

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for providing my students with such an amazing library! I look forwards to sharing your gift with my students. I know that these are the books, characters and plots that will hook them into the enjoyment of literature for life. Through your kindness, I will grow a garden of readers who are ready and able to face the world ahead of them.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Malm

  • The Power of Independent Self-Selected Reading

    Funded Sep 13, 2016

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your generous donations to my book project. Coming from a school in which the majority of my students are from low-income families, your donation is even more impactful.

Just like anything else in life, students don't excel at reading unless they practice it. Because of this, we start every class with independent reading. During this reading time, I want students to find an author, a character or a story that really speaks to them. I wasn't able to give students enough choice in this until I received your donation. Now I have books in my library from authors that speak their language, with characters that look like them and plots that they connect to.

Because of this, students are starting to embrace reading. They are starting to find their favorite books. Thanks to you, they are on their way not only to becoming readers, but to becoming successful in academia and ultimately in life.

    Thank you.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Malm

I am a believer that everyone is a reader. Those who claim they aren't just haven't found the right book. I am dedicated to helping each of my students find that right book. I can't do so, however, unless I have a library diverse enough to appeal to the diversity of interests of my students. Please help my students develop that lifelong love of reading. In order to become proficient readers, students need to practice reading. Students are not going to want to practice reading unless they like the book they are reading. Please donate to help these students find the books that will motivate them to continue the journey of reading into adulthood.
