This year our campus big push is critical thinking. As a fun and engaging way to help foster critical thinking in our classrooms we are adding an hour of coding into our weekly routines. Coding will not only help them develop critical thinking skills to be successful but will also allow them to learn a skill that can be a career option for them when they get older. With your help, I will be able to buy the tools necessary to not only engage my kindergarten students but help them develop necessary skills needed to have a successful future. I am planning on using my code a pillar in both reading and math. One way I am planning on using this is for both letter and number recognition. Students will be able to match lower case letters with upper case letter. Upper case letters will be set up on cones and lower case letters will be flash cards. When a student picks a lower case letter they have to code the caterpillar to go to the matching upper case letter. They will do the same with numbers by counting a set of objects and matching it to the number. Ozobots will be used to learn letter and number formation and also engaged my students who are having a difficult time learning how to write their name. This will be a fun way for them to learn these skills opposed to using only paper and pencil. The break out boxes are really going to get them engaged and have fun while learning skills such as beginning sounds, counting syllables, building number sense and developing critical thinking skills.
