Currently students are using old bed pillows to create a comfortable spot to read or work off their laps with a clipboard. The style and size desks provided for my fifth graders are best suited for primary grades, as the desk tops connect to the side of the seats, making maneuvering in and out of their desks difficult. Their desks are anything but comfortable! Many students opt to sit on the floor since they are extremely uncomfortable, and embarrassed at times to "squeeze" into the clutches of this style furniture. Having floor pillows, a few bean bag chairs to choose from, as well as some wobble seats will provide a comfortable, flexible, and kid friendly learning environment. Using a Universal Learning Design requires flexible seating because students work independently, paired, and in small groups. Activities and projects require movement and the need to move seating around to accommodate the frequent changes in station routines.
