We will be launching a unit in January where we study the American Revolution in-depth, and I'd like to make sure that students are able to think about this period in history from a diverse group of perspectives. Women, Africans, Native Americans, loyalists, patriots, etc. will all be represented in these texts (and a few others I've already been able to get my hands on). Students will select a book from the options available to read with their book club members. Hence, the collection of multiple copies of various books related to the topic. I am hoping to offer them a wide range of options to choose from. The picture books will help support my school's initiative to provide students with an anti-bias and anti-racist environment. The procurement of books that feature characters from a myriad of ethnic backgrounds as well as themes that help students better understand themselves and the world they live in is exactly what we need to support the initiative. Students will engage in thinking and reflecting after reading each story as either a window, mirror, or both. A window is a story that helps you better understand someone else who is different from you. A mirror is a story that allows the reader to see themselves in the text. The big idea is that windows allow us to build more tolerance, compassion, and empathy for others who may be different and mirrors will instill price and self-compassion in individual students. The printer ink, laminate, and timers will help support our writer's workshop writing sessions and our publishing parties. Thank you so much in advance!
