One of the cornerstones of the kindergarten day is Story Time where the teacher reads aloud to her students. Reading aloud to students builds many important foundational reading skills, introduces new vocabulary, provides a model of fluent, expressive reading, and most importantly, engages children in the joy of reading and stories. Typically, a teacher gathers the class for Story Time on a classroom rug so that all students are close to her as she reads and can both hear well and easily see the book's illustrations. This was what I did with my class--until we had a plumbing incident in our room and my classroom flooded with several inches of water! After that, we had to dispose of our rug, and it just isn't the same to sit on linoleum tile. A new carpet will provide my students with a comfortable place for whole group learning activities, including Read Alouds. In kindergarten, we also gather on our classroom carpet for many other learning activities, such as Writers Workshop and math lessons. The colorful soft carpet area helps children settle in and be comfortable sitting "crisscross applesauce". Rugs that are designed with a pattern of large rectangles help students stay in one spot during instruction, thus improving their focus. Plus a bright colorful rug just makes the classroom all the more appealing and inviting!
