  • Inclusive Classroom Library

    Funded Oct 21, 2021

When I first saw that people had given to my project, I could not help but squeal with joy. I was excited for my students that they would have the opportunity to read more culturally relevant novels and books that spark their love for reading. It is with great gratitude and appreciation that I submit this impact letter to you for your kindness and willingness to donate to my project.

"Wonder" was a big hit with most if not all of my kids too. During our novel study, we held a lot of classroom discussions about the power of choosing to be kind, empathy and creating kinder humans in a world that can be cruel. We held peer shout outs every day and the more we read the more empathetic my students became. A favorite quote from the book that my students repeatedly quote is, "I think there should be a rule that everyone in the world should get a standing ovation at least once in their lives. "

Having access to multicultural literature has empowered my students to have positive attitudes towards diversity and tolerance, and that it is okay for others to be different from what they are used to! That is priceless in the world we live in today. They will one day be respectful and character minded citizens of this world, that have empathy and tolerance for all people. "When given the choice between being right and being kind. Choose kind."”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Hurtado

  • Single Desks Are Restricting, Please Help Me Provide Flexible Seating!

    Funded Oct 23, 2019

I do not have the words to express my gratitude for your support for our project. We try to offer as many opportunities to our students as we can, and your support makes it possible for us to continue to do this. The supplies that you are providing for my students will allow them to work collaboratively in groups and allow them the freedom of choice. My students love to participate in “Starbucks Mode” where they can turn the music on, work quietly and sit in a “comfy spot” which to them has been the floor or my desk. I appreciate your interest and support so much. Thank you, thank you, thank you!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Hurtado

This classroom project was brought to life by Chevron Fuel Your School.
6th grade math teacher in Carson, California. Over 75% of my students qualify for free or reduced lunch, over 10 students with IEPs, ELD students, and 100% of students who are ready and eager to learn! School just began a couple of weeks ago and I can already say that this is an amazing group of scholars! The first couple of weeks we worked on team building and getting to know each other. I've learned so much about these kiddos. There are many that wish to go into mathematical driven fields such as engineering, coding, real estate, and so on. They indeed are the future. The classroom I was given this year is a lecture type hall. It makes it difficult for students to sit in groups to work collaboratively and the single row desks isolate them from one another. Teamwork makes the dream work
