  • Look at Me- I'm Reading!

    Funded Dec 9, 2022

Thank you so much for contributing to my reading project "Look at Me-I'm Reading."

I work with special education students who are emerging and beginning readers. Since my educational assistant and I have started using these books, most of them have improved their reading skills. My oldest student has developed a love of reading, with one-on-one reading practice being his favorite time of the day. Starting the year knowing only one letter sound, he has read his way through a significant number of books in my library. He has started referring to himself as a good reader. He can now sound out or recognize a number of words in his grade level text.

On the other end of the spectrum, one of my students with an intellectual disability, who had previously indicated she "hated reading," just read her first decodable book. Whereas I had only planned to start her with a few pages, she wanted to keep going. She made sure to tell her general education teacher that she read a book "all by herself." Learning to read will help to determine the level of independence she will enjoy as an adult.

Because there is a significant reading gap between many of my students and their typically developing peers, independent reading time in their regular education classrooms had been a problem. Having them flip through a book from their classroom library that they can't read is not a good use of their time. Rather, they can now borrow the books that you donated. This allows them to use the time productively, developing their reading skills by reading words at their level.

Your donation has impacted the lives of my students. Their skills continue to grow, as well as their understanding of themselves as real readers. Being able to read will change the trajectory of their lives. Again, I thank you.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Robinson

  • Learning to Read, So We Can Read to Learn

    Funded May 11, 2017

Thank you for the wonderful books for our special education classroom library. I wish you could have seen my students' eyes light up when they saw all the books. Thank you, donors, for fostering a love of reading in children for whom reading does not come easily.

My students are enjoying reading books at their reading level, which are not always readily available in their general education classrooms. Appropriately leveled books allow them to practice reading fluently, to see progress, and trust that their efforts will result in improvement. This is huge! When frustrated, lower performing students start seeing a payoff for their efforts, motivation and learning increase. For example, whenever I did guided reading with Sofie last year, she would resist, saying, "I can't read." However, she loves our new books and has enjoyed success reading them. She has a great sense of humor and Gran on a Fan is her new favorite. Now, she asks to read books. Thank you, donors!

I had a similar experience with Darnell. We got ready to read and he said, "I can't read." I asked him to try and told him I would help him with the hard words. He started reading. He kept reading, with just a little help. I said, "Wait! I thought you told me you couldn't read!" He laughed. Thank you, donors! You helped change Darnell's ideas about himself as a reader.

Last year, I told my mentor that the missing piece in my literacy work was having books that specifically utilized the spelling/literacy patterns we were learning. These books do that. We are using these books to highlight and reinforce different phonics and spelling patterns. Green Eggs and Ham was great for teaching the short /a/ sound, as we read about "Sam I Am." We also read the first section of Gran on a Fan, which is a huge hit. My students love the illustrations and whimsical writing. These books make reading fun. We'll be reading The Bug in the Jug Wants a Hug tomorrow when we continue to focus on the short /u/ for our spelling words.

These books have also helped my students to understand rhyming words. Half of my students began the year unable to recognize or generate a rhyming word. These books have helped my students become more proficient at rhyming, which will be critical background knowledge as we move into word families. These books are also helping my students to learn, review, and apply their sight words.

As the year continues, we will use the other books to introduce long vowels and more complex spelling/literacy patterns. As their confidence increases, we will do more partner reading and ultimately some Readers' Theater.

Thank you, again, for your generous donation. Your generosity is helping my students to be better, more engaged readers!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Robinson

My students try very hard to learn as much as they can. School is difficult for them, but nothing makes them more proud than doing well on an assignment. However, due to their disabilities, they are easily distracted and find it difficult to concentrate or persevere through new material. Your donation will help me to add proven therapeutic devices such as weighted vests, Bouncy Bands, and Lap Pads to our classroom in order to help my students remain calm, focused, and on-task. Through the additional support that these research-based devices will provide, these wonderfully motivated students will be the most effective learners they can be. Your donation helps them to strengthen the belief that strong effort yields positive results.
