With the materials I have requested, I will be able to continue constructing leveled books for them. I am currently subscribing to a curriculum-based website that gives me access to thousands of curriculum-aligned books and materials that have been modified to fit the needs of my unique students. These books accompany each of the lessons that I teach (I am currently making several books a week!). Our students currently go to the library, but there are no books that are appropriate for them. I am hoping to work with the librarian to create a space in the library where some of our leveled books can be kept. This would allow my students to experience going to the library and taking out a book that is age-appropriate, high-interest, and at their reading level. Something that until now, they have not been able to do.
These supplies will help my students access the curriculum through materials that are designed for students with disabilities.
Not only is the content area important, but these books also give me the opportunity to make our school's culture more inclusive. Having these books in our school’s library would allow not only my 12 students to have the experience of walking to the library and checking out a book, but it would also allow an additional 40 or so students in our other programs to as well.
