I am asking for six Kindles with child-proof cases and screen protectors (extremely necessary for fidgety five-year-olds). Additionally, I have asked for sets of headphones so students can work independently, without disrupting their classmates. The Kindles will be loaded with educational apps, including Lexia, the literacy program utilized by school district. The Kindles will allow these young students to find flexible and comfortable learning spaces, rather than being confined to tables. The Kindles will be an integral part of daily literacy instruction in my classroom. Students will alternate using the Kindles everyday during literacy centers. Students will be able to read e-books, practice phonics and sight words, and explore educational apps. Not only will this add excitement and meaning to the curriculum, it will allow students to participate in meaningful learning while the teacher is working with other students individually or in small groups. In a class of twenty-five students, it is nearly impossible for a teacher to find time to give each student the individual attention they need and deserve. These Kindles would help create an environment in which the teacher would be able to deliver more individualized instruction. As a first year teacher at an underfunded school, I bought most of the supplies and decorations for my classroom out of pocket. Receiving these Kindles would be an incredible gift to these enthusiastic and energetic learners that I cannot afford to give them myself. The Kindles would reinforce daily instruction and bring new excitement to a very deserving group of young learners.
