In preparation for college, our juniors will read nonfiction books that encompass both history and literature. I chose these two books specifically because they tie into the themes we cover in American Literature - the American Dream where I plan to use One Summer: America, 1927 to illustrate ALL of the exciting discoveries and activities prior to the stock market crash of 1929. In this book there is something for everyone - sports, politics, flying, driving, prohibition and industry. Equally as exciting is my second choice: Devil in the White City. We are physically close to Chicago - our students know the city. There is drama, intrigue, adventure and just plain scary stuff in this take on a big part of American history - the World Fair. Both of these books will positively contribute to the overall understanding of our history and our literature.
