Classroom appearance is an essential component of early childhood development. Young children, especially in high needs urban settings, spend the majority of their waking hours with their teachers in a classroom setting. A good portion of my job is to create a classroom students and parents look forward to seeing.
The way I present my classroom to my students is a reflection of my character, and evidence of my desire for my students to feel loved, safe, and successful. Students who walk into a classroom full of life, color, and creativity will be much more likely to come to school regularly, on time, and eager to learn. There are a few reasons I have requested the items on my list. First, our school only has one black and white copier to print worksheets, flyers, etc. I requested a color printer for the classroom not only to make it easier for me to quickly print without having to leave the room, but also to enhance the classroom, bulletin boards, print colorful pictures/student awards, etc. Secondly, we do receive supplies for our classroom at the beginning of the year, though our funding for this is very limited. Most classroom decorations need to be purchased by the teachers, which our salaries don't always afford. I've requested the borders, name plates, and pop-out letters to help create a stimulating classroom environment, as well as highlight student work throughout the year.
A decorative, fun-filled classroom with proper supplies will set me in the right direction to making learning enjoyable for my students. The learning atmosphere will be warm, inviting, and primed for academic and social/emotional growth and my students will begin to see themselves as valued rather than overlooked.
