Children learn best through exploration and experience, which is why it is important to give children multiple opportunities to participate in sensory play in the classroom. A sand and water learning center is a great tool that offers children sensory play experiences. With the sand and water table, children are able to explore the different properties and uses of sand and water as they dig, touch, scoop, pour, and engage in imaginative play. It also encourages creativity, offers an opportunity to learn math and science skills, and helps social development.
Special Education at the Pre-K level is focused on giving children multiple and different opportunities to learn through exploration and experiences, and encouraging creativity and social development through indoor and outdoor play. Sadly, most students who live in this area do not have the opportunity to play with these types of toys at home due to their economic standings, and schools don't readily available funding to buy all the necessary tools for the classrooms due to state budget cuts in the DOE. By having this available to them, the students will be able to develop the necessary skills to prepare them for Kindergarten and possible entrance into the general education classroom.
