I am requesting comfortable and flexible seating because I want my students to feel at home in their classroom. I don't want my students to be confined to their desks. I want our classroom to be a home away from home. I have students in my class living in a low socioeconomic class. I want my students to feel relaxed, school is an awesome place to be and I want that to translate throughout our classroom environment. My students love to read. I believe in the necessity of diversity and representation in literature. I want the literature in our classroom to capture the beauty of our classrooms diversity. I want my students to find an abundance of books in our classroom library that interests them. As an African American woman, I struggled as a child to find literature that featured characters such as myself. I want that to change for the students in my class. As a first year teacher, one of my greatest moments of happiness is seeing the excitement that bubbles up from my students when they are able to explore our classroom library and read. I love watching as they become completely engrossed in a book. Literature has changed my life and has given me a broader perspective of the world because of its ability to see the world through different lenses. I believe in the power of literature and by the end of the year I want to see how reading changes my students lives. By donating to our project you are helping a classroom transform into a home. You are also giving students the ability to find representation of themselves and others in literature to broaden their scope of our beautifully diverse world.
