We come to the floor several times a day, beginning first thing in the morning for our Morning Meeting. This is where we build social skills and practice oral language by greet each other, share news of the day, read the morning message, review the calendar and weather and listen to a story together. During the course of the day, we return to the floor multiple times for whole group and small group activities as we read and write, work on math problems, and learn about science and social studies. We also express ourselves through music and dance. The new carpet will give us a clean, comfortable place to sit. It will also give us an easy, organized way to assemble on and leave the floor. The colors and letters on the carpet will reinforce alphabet and color recognition. Students can be called to or dismissed from the carpet in groups by color, letter, row or column. We can even play games and engage in movement using the symbols. At the end of the day, we meet on the floor again and hold our Closing Circle. We reflect on the day we’ve had, share our successes, and plan our goals for the next day.
