Students at this school are required to meet a number of academic standards, which function to ensure they're receiving an adequate education at the high school level. It is also important that the content of language arts be interesting to them personally. The autobiography, "Black Boy," by Richard Wright will be especially important for the large number of African-American students at this school. In this book, they learn about racism and how to overcome societal obstacles. Richard Wright will challenge them to look at their own lives growing up and how they make personal choices. It will also provoke poignant discussions, which turn into fantastic argumentative essays.
