  • Tablets Today, Readers Tomorrow!

    Funded Feb 9, 2017

As we all know, technology has hit us like a tidal wave hits the shore. And sometimes that wave gets bigger. Well, technology seems to get more savvy as the years go on, but there are kids that are satisfied with what works and don't need the latest iphone or ipad out there. This reason is because a majority of the class are at a low poverty level and are appreciative with what they have and do not complain about having the newest phone, video game or ipad.

I say this because when they found out that they were going to have access to 3 tablets, I saw such joy in their eyes. They never asked could they play a game that is only made for the latest PS4. These kids immediately asked me what math games they could play and I got really excited when I heard that!

After receiving the tablets and setting up our "extended" technology center, the kids couldn't wait to get into rotation. When it was their group's turn to get to work with the tablets their faces lit up!! Fortunately, this years class is fantastic, so they knew exactly where to go and what to do...math test preparation!

Finally, I believe the biggest impact receiving 3 new tablets was that MORE kids were able to be preparing for state testing or doing research. The students always had to wait days to get back to technology as their rotation and now there are 2 rotations. I see the improvement in many areas. The first being the typing itself. Since state testing is computer driven, these kids have to know how to type and get around a computer or tablet. Secondly, their data has grown due to being able to use the technology much more now. State testing is right around the corner and I am confident that they will do well and a large percentage will be due to the gracious generosity of the donors that make a difference in the lives of children each day.”

  • Exciting Elmo!!

    Funded Feb 26, 2010

I just wanted to take this time to thank you for your generous donation for the Elmo (we call it a document reader as it is easier for the kids to remember). My kids have enjoyed this immensely and I am quite sure that they and future classes will continue to. Having this Elmo (document reader) has changed the dynamic of my classroom. With all the technology out there it is hard to choose what will be best for your class. I am so glad I chose this piece of technology as my students enjoy using it and I feel that my teaching is easier to understand (I have A LOT of visual learners in my class). They feel so important when they get to come up and use this, it is as if they own it. Many have stated that it is quite easy for them, especially for math.

In addition to loving this document reader, I also appreciate it. In these days and times of serious budget cuts, a teacher would not be able to get such a valuable piece of equipment. I know of many teachers that are still using the white boards and even the chalkboards! So to have my document reader is, to me, a very special gift that I will always remember where it came from.

It is people like you that make low-income, english learning and title one classrooms better for the kids. At least in my classroom, as I said, the kids feel as if they own it and are proud to have. I cannot describe the feeling of seeing them so happy to use this! Besides in the classroom, they would never see something like this and as I said in my opening paragraph, they are greatly enjoying it! I have sticks in my class that I choose who gets to come up and use it. They are on the edge of their seat just waiting for their name to be picked! It is actually quite hilarious.

Again, thank you so much for your time and wonderful gift you have given my classroom. Teaching all subjects is not only easier, but it is more practical and most of all, fun!

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. P.

I am a 5th grade teacher. I have 32 eager-to-learn students this year and 8 of them are English Language Learners. We are a low-income, title one school. The majority of our school population is Hispanic, therefore we have many parents who are non-English speakers which is a major obstacle for teachers who do not speak their language. Lastly, we do mainstream Special Education students for math and reading. We like to use the "full-inclusion" method by making the Special Ed students feel as though they are just another part of a class and not separated out.
