Funded Sep 28, 2023It is with great gratitude and appreciation that I submit this impact letter to you for your kindness and willingness to give to "Books Connect Us All." In our class, we were reading Rick Riordan's The Lightning Thief which is under the fantasy genre. I really wanted to expand my classroom library with additional books from that genre. The books I received were different reading levels and with different characters which many of my students could connect with. I also added a few more books in verse to my collection which is a very popular genre these days.
Each month I give my students an opportunity to select a book of their choice. They participate in book speed dating or a book tasting. After receiving the books, I transformed my classroom into a restaurant and held a book tasting. My students were invited and had an opportunity to "taste" the different meals (genres). As they entered my classroom, every single student was excited to "sample" a new book and fill out their menu. With the books that were donated we have been able to broaden our horizons through literature, and hold discussions on how the books reflect cultural tolerance. Many of my students were able to pick up a book and see themselves in it.
Having access to multicultural literature has empowered my students to have positive attitudes towards diversity and tolerance, and that it is okay for others to be different from what they are used to. I am hoping they will one day be respectful and character minded citizens of this world, that have sensitivity and tolerance for all people.
Again, thank you for your generous donation. My students lit up when the boxes of books arrived! Many reluctant readers were now begging to borrow a new book. This is definitely gaining their love for reading and allowing them to communicate and share their ideas with one another. I hope that I am helping to create life long readers with your help.”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Mavra
