  • Unlocking Language Through Stories: Graphic Novels

    Funded Oct 18, 2024

Thank you so much for your generous donation to our DonorsChoose project! We are so grateful for your contribution to our classroom library. Graphic novels are a favorite for so many of my students. These books have been a wonderful addition to our classroom library and have helped my students continue to develop their reading and thinking skills. While these books are written in a somewhat easier and more engaging way for them to relate to, they still share a powerful message. My students love going "book shopping" because of the variety of books available. Now there are even more books of interest for my students to select from and connect with.

Thank you again for supporting this project- you have made a tremendous impact in our classroom!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Mavra

  • Perfectly Printed!

    Funded Dec 21, 2023

Thank you so much for your generous donations towards our printer and accessories. When the printer arrived my students were ecstatic! I have to admit I was too! There are so many ways that the printer has been used in the classroom. We got it all plugged in and ready to print and we couldn't wait to get started and use it. So, I printed some of the supplemental items for our stations and got them laminated and we started using them at once!

The impact that this printer has had on our classroom is immense! I am now able to print awesome teacher made items that I have created and purchased to help enrich and intervene the learning that is going on in my classroom. I have also been able to quickly print student work and positive letters for notes home. This helps making my monthly bulletin boards a breeze and communication with parents more productive as well. The convenience of having the printer in our room alone is amazing! I no longer have to wait until a break or before and after school to print something I might need in a moments notice.

We cannot thank you enough! You have made such an impact on my teaching, my students, and their everyday learning! Thank you so very much!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Mavra

  • Books Connect Us All

    Funded Sep 28, 2023

It is with great gratitude and appreciation that I submit this impact letter to you for your kindness and willingness to give to "Books Connect Us All." In our class, we were reading Rick Riordan's The Lightning Thief which is under the fantasy genre. I really wanted to expand my classroom library with additional books from that genre. The books I received were different reading levels and with different characters which many of my students could connect with. I also added a few more books in verse to my collection which is a very popular genre these days.

Each month I give my students an opportunity to select a book of their choice. They participate in book speed dating or a book tasting. After receiving the books, I transformed my classroom into a restaurant and held a book tasting. My students were invited and had an opportunity to "taste" the different meals (genres). As they entered my classroom, every single student was excited to "sample" a new book and fill out their menu. With the books that were donated we have been able to broaden our horizons through literature, and hold discussions on how the books reflect cultural tolerance. Many of my students were able to pick up a book and see themselves in it.

Having access to multicultural literature has empowered my students to have positive attitudes towards diversity and tolerance, and that it is okay for others to be different from what they are used to. I am hoping they will one day be respectful and character minded citizens of this world, that have sensitivity and tolerance for all people.

Again, thank you for your generous donation. My students lit up when the boxes of books arrived! Many reluctant readers were now begging to borrow a new book. This is definitely gaining their love for reading and allowing them to communicate and share their ideas with one another. I hope that I am helping to create life long readers with your help.”

  • Reluctant Readers

    Funded Sep 1, 2009

I am writing to thank you for your wonderful donation. Without it many of my students would not have come in contact with books and magazines on topics they are interested in. Two wonderful things have happened in my classroom because of you.

Firstly, our school has what we call a 25 book campaign. What this means is every student is required to read at least 25 books on their level each year. Because of you and the books I was able to purchase, I have at least 5 students in every class who have already reached their goal! I have many others not too far behind, expected to finish early. The scary story books and Twilight were a huge hit throughout October and November.

Secondly, the subscription to Time for Kids helped immensely when we worked on our feature article unit back in the fall. Even though we finished that unit months ago, I continue to use the magazine weekly, keeping my students up do date with world issues. The bright colors, bold print, photos and different leveled stories have touched all of my students!

I am very grateful for your help. Thank you for helping make a difference in these students' lives. ”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Mavra

Struggling readers often look for an excuse not to read. This is especially true if there isn't a good selection of books and reading materials to choose from. My sixth grade classes are composed of some very reluctant and struggling readers. They would rather do anything than pick up a book during independent reading time, nevermind reading at home.
