In the past, my reading groups read a few excellent and exciting novels that would capture the imagination of any child. However, the few novels that were available to my class were not culturally diverse.
This year, I am focusing on the uniqueness of all cultures. To understand the world in which we live in, it is essential that my students understand and appreciate their own cultures and the cultures beyond their own. By reading a variety of novels with diverse characters, such as Delphine in "One Crazy Summer" by Rita Williams Garcia or Abby and Sadeed, in "Extra Credit" by Andrew Clements, students will be able to see for themselves similarities and differences within all of us.
