To practice one-on-one and small group discussions, as well as practice empathy, students will read books with the common themes of bullying and the ability for people to change. Students will be responsible for pushing themselves to read both in the classroom and at home, as well as complete jobs related to their novels (vocabulary acquisition, synthesizing their reading by creating discussion and "test" questions, researching topics related, etc.) and engaging in character analysis.
In order to give the students autonomy in their reading and discussions, we must first purchase and have enough books accessible for each student to engage with! These books will be another opportunity for our students to engage with reading in a positive way.
The novels selected for their literature circles all share the common theme of bullying and how people work through issues of bullying. Middle school can be a tough time for many students, especially as they are struggling to work through who they are, who they want to become, and how their actions might impact others. Novels dealing with issues specific to bullying will allow us to have conversations about being a bystander vs. upstander, how our actions affect others, and ways that we can work to improve ourselves and those we interact with. It will also help us tackle literary elements such as static vs. dynamic character. We will use static vs. dynamic characters to consider how characters' actions shape and change who they are as people. Overall, these texts will provide a starting point for rich and meaningful discussions.
