  • Good Hygiene for Good Attendance

    Funded Aug 14, 2024

My students have willingly volunteered to wipe tables down now that there is a container of Clorox wipes on every table. The classroom looks and smells cleaner, and hopefully we will keep the cold & flu germs at bay once we get into the heavy illness season. Students are also really happy about having tissues that don't chap their noses!

Because one of the items wasn't available, I replaced it with some small snacks for students, as they are often hungry in class. These have been very appreciated and they help students keep their energy up throughout the day.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Wregglesworth

  • Snacks for Hungry Bellies

    Funded Jan 8, 2024

It has been fantastic having snacks in my classroom for my students. They are more alert and engaged with full tummies. It has also helped them with social skills, as I require them to ask before taking a snack, and encourage them to say please and thank you.

I thank you very much for the support and for understanding that sometimes what kids get to eat at school and at home is just not enough for their growing bodies and minds. They have been very appreciative and I'm already looking for ways to continue to fill the snack box when the current supplies run out. From the bottom of my heart, I appreciate you!”

  • Hygiene Supplies for Confidence

    Funded May 9, 2023

My students rely on the hygiene supplies that this project provided in order to be confident and focused in school. Many of them do not have the means to purchase the supplies, and our school no longer fills the vending machine in the restroom. I regularly have students come to me to let me know that the basket is empty, or offer to fill it for me. I appreciate that they are taking the initiative to help one another and advocate for themselves and their health and hygiene needs.

I thoroughly appreciate your help with this project and I know that my students also appreciate not having to worry about their health and hygiene needs. They can focus on school and their learning, and being confident in their everyday lives.”

  • A Choice of Seats at the Table, Part 9

    Funded Jan 10, 2023

My students are loving the additional chairs to choose from when they arrive in class everyday. It has even encouraged students to arrive early so they can get their pick of seats - an unintended, but positive consequence!

We do a lot of group work that requires students to collaborate, so having wheels on their chairs eliminates the awful "scrape, scrape" of scooting regular chairs around the room. Additionally, being able to slide back-and-forth, and wiggle around has been so important during a particularly strange winter where even outdoor winter activities were limited.

I hope that these chairs will continue to benefit my students in the months and years to come, and that their ability to move will also engage their brains in the process of learning.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Wregglesworth

  • A Choice of Seats at the Table, part 8

    Funded Mar 10, 2022

These new chairs have been a great addition to my classroom, as students really like to have arms on the chairs for comfort. They have made it so that there are enough chairs for every student with some extras left over for me to use when I am helping individual students or groups.

My students were very happy when the chairs arrived, so much so that they offered to help put them together! Letting them do this has helped with buy in and students are more likely to take good care of the chairs and use positive peer pressure to stop their classmates if they are doing something destructive.”

  • Understanding Life on the Run

    Funded Nov 30, 2021

This book has been an excellent resource for students to understand what life is like "on the run" for refugees during a various crises throughout the world. This book specifically offers a comparison of three different crises from the early 20th century (a Jewish boy escaping the Holocaust), to the late 20th century (a Cuban girl escaping Castro via raft), to modern-day Syria (a boy and his family fleeing to Europe).

Within my class, we read the book together, usually with me reading and students following along, but I will also take volunteers to read. This gives us the ability to stop and discuss important or impactful parts of the book together.”

  • Clean and Healthy Classroom

    Funded Oct 22, 2021

Students were so happy to have the small bottles of hand sanitizer on each table so they could sanitize their hands without having to constantly get up and walk to the door or the shelf at the back of the classroom. It was better for me too, because there weren't so many distractions and moving body noises!

I have students from other classes find their way to my room to use the Puffs Plus tissues! Our school-supplied tissues are single ply and rough to the touch, so sensitive noses appreciate the soft, multi-ply, moisturizing tissues, especially when noses are running like leaky faucets!”

  • Everything Sad Is Untrue, a Novel

    Funded Aug 12, 2021

Introducing students who have lived in the same place their entire lives to the experience of refugees is always a difficult task. However, Daniel Nayeri's book has made it easier. His treatment of his own experience - a fictionalized memoir - offers emotion and detail that students enjoy and can gain knowledge from.

I have helped my students to focus on the cultural representations used in the book, and compare them to their own culture and ideas about culture. I hope that I can expand the minds of my students to be prepared for the very vast and different world they will experience in their adulthood.”

  • Feminine Supplies for Our Girls

    Funded Sep 23, 2021

These feminine hygiene supplies have been such an important addition to the lives of my students. I have students thank me on an almost daily basis for providing pads and tampons for them to use when they need them. Having this type of emergency can be completely demoralizing for young women, and can cause them to have to leave school during the day, or even miss entire days as they don't have access to these supplies otherwise.

Thanks again for your generosity and for helping my students to be their best even when they might not be feeling their best!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Wregglesworth

I teach high school social studies in a small, rural community that has been hit hard not only by the recession, but also by generational poverty. Many of my students come from split families and have to rely on themselves to be successful in school. I am the only full-time social studies teacher in the high school and see students for two of their three required classes (World History and Civics). I also see many of them again for elective courses: Women's Studies, World Cultures, and Current Events. Our school has to make do with what we have, and that is very little, but we have turned out some amazing success stories in the past (including being named a Bronze Medal School by US News & World Report) and I hope we can continue to do that in the future.
