Vocabulary is said to be the building block of language. Improving vocabulary skills will increase skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Student achievement advances in all areas when emphasis is placed on vocabulary development. Donations for materials in this project will provide students who are already identified with communication delays, access to a variety of engaging materials and motivating games that will specifically target their vocabulary goals. These materials will also target basic concept skills since these words help children understand classroom directions and use language related to position, quantity, time, sequence, etc. Vocabulary that targets feelings and perspective will encourage social-emotional development. The vinyl banners will be displayed in the special education classrooms so students with the highest communication needs will have access to a larger sized Core Word board where they can point to picture vocabulary when needed for communication purposes. A child's ability to communicate directly impacts academic and social success.
