The use of hands-on materials in teaching literacy and mathematics allow students to construct their own cognitive models for abstract ideas and processes. Hands-on materials have the advantage of engaging students and increasing both interest in and enjoyment of learning. Reading a book or listening to a lecture can be a challenge even for the most focused student. With these materials, students will be able to acquire knowledge through experience rather than abstraction and using a greater range of intelligence to solve problems. Tactile learners will have the opportunity to increase their learning experience. Students learn in a variety of ways. It is important for me, as an educator, to use different teaching styles to meet student needs. Hands-on learning lets students become the teacher. These activities will let my students' minds grow and learn based on the experiences and the environment they are exposed to. It will allow my students to discuss, investigate, create, and discover with their classmates. My students will be using these materials during guided reading time. I will be working with a small group while the others will be in these learning centers for small group instruction. The Read-Along sets will be use in the listening centers so students can follow along. The fishing for sight words set is a good practice for students to work with their classmates while practicing sight words. The alphabet tubs and phonics centers will help my early learners with sounding out words to help them with their reading skills. As the students become familiar with the skill they are learning, they begin to work independently, which requires less teacher support and allow more interactive learning experiences to occur.
