My students have various sensory needs due to their autism that prevents them from focusing throughout the classroom day. Having these items will set my students up for success and help them to reach their maximum potential. I want to create a classroom where students can fulfill those sensory needs and create an experience where they can be the best learners. By having these items, my students will also work on their language skills by requesting/ advocating these items in order fulfill their sensory needs. My classroom will have a sensory corner which will include the play mat, a tent, a bean bag chair, a calm down kit (which will be filled with various sensory items), and a reinforcers bin filled with other sensory items to use during Applied Behavior Analysis training in the mornings. For my students with autism, it is especially important for these students to have this designated sensory area in the classroom. Students will have increased focus when when working because sensory items increase serotonin as well as alerting input in their brain and bodies. A sensory corner also encourages emotional regulation which creates a smoother classroom environment and better attending to task during the school day. A sensory corner increases more learning and less behaviors! Please help my students fulfill their sensory needs by making this project a reality! My class and I will be forever grateful that you made this school year a successful one. Thank you!
