The kids are so excited about this project. They wanted to describe it themselves: "Lots of times, teachers use their own money to buy books for their classroom. Teachers need to save their money for things like pencils, art supplies, and their own family. So we’re here to ask you if you could donate some money so we can buy some new books. Our goal is $900 for books like nonfiction, realistic fiction, historical fiction, and fantasy."
KD and BH wrote, "If you donate money for our class, we can buy books so we can open our imagination and learn about people we never knew about, like nurses who helped in the Civil War like Clara Barton, or people who saved hundreds of slaves like Harriet Tubman." They're both frequent readers, and have blasted through the small 'Amazing Women' book tub we already have.
I asked why they were so interested in these people and in having more books about them. "I never knew about them before I read a book about them," KD answered, like it should be obvious.
BH added, "We were like, 'Oh my god! I never knew about Harriet Tubman until this book told me about her.' But that only gave us a little information. We want more information to know about heroes that helped lots of people in the world."
JTR is interested in the historical fiction and history books we've asked for. "If they weren't as interesting, I'd probably still read them," he admitted. "But [Steve Sheinkin] is really good." He's also asked several times about the I Survived books he specifically requested.
Books like this--at their level, about characters and topics they're interested in--make a huge difference. "And it will make our teacher super happy," KD points out.
